Personal Statement

From my perspective, fashion design is an art format closely connected with humans.

Fashion design is a method of communicating personal thoughts and emotions through visualization. Whereas people's everyday clothes give a visual judgement of who you are, for me, fashion design is an individual section that separates the designer from daily life. It serves as a safe, uninfluenced space that escapes from the anxiety of appearance to demonstrate the inner world of a person.

What interests me most is the integration of clothing and other technology, to experiment with various materials on the human body, such as visual dislocation, bio-digital structures, wind-driven structures, delayed imaging.

In one of the part 2 projects I learned to translate inspiration into design ideas. By visually extracting concrete elements and abstract feeling emotions, I learnt how to develop the abstract emotions further researching and breaking them down with concrete elements. I was given a specified image and song as a source as inspiration, referencing the darker colours and softer materials of the image and introducing the unreal emotional tone of the song. This led me to decide to create the angular three-dimensional structure first, and then supplement the details with felt and wool. I understood that design can come from all aspects of life and that both the abstract and the concrete can be used in design.

I like to use non-traditional materials and investigate a wide range of distinctive mediums. For one of my projects on my foundation course, I discovered Samuel Zeller's photography, botanical by chance. I was amazed by its hazy texture that matched my inspiration for California dreamin'. To mimic this effect, I painted the broken mirror and then coated it with a hot glue gun, which both wrapped the sharp edges and made the image hazy. This material worked well to bring out the vintage and dreamy atmosphere I aimed for. In previous projects, I have seen students use materials that I would not have imagined, such as biscuits and tea bags, which are literally not suitable for use in clothing, but that is certainly a strong statement. This gave me a new perspective on the choice of materials and broadened my mind.

Apart from fashion design, I am interested to explore biological and physical principles, such as bio-digital sculptures by ecoLogicStudio, forming the units of biological intelligence of the system with 3d printing. It puts a simulated ecological environment into a man-made device. I also like to combine electronics with clothing, and under the influence of my grandfather, who was an electronics engineer, I became interested in the technique of using microcontrollers to program light effects in clothing. I have clear awareness of the diversity of the fashion industry. I believe this cross-disciplinary experimentation has opened my eyes to the future possibilities of clothing, breaking down the limits of my imagination for creative inspiration and giving me the confidence that anything I can think of is achievable and therefore more confident in my creativity.

In my undergraduate studies, I look forward to learning how to create an ideal emotional and atmospheric expression by combining the human body with three-dimensional structures. In terms of specific skills, I hope to learn about the functional structure of clothing that I can incorporate into my current ideas to make them more ergonomic; develop appropriate fabrics around my own clothing and learn to use different prints and materials. Also, understanding the existing clothing market and developing a complete shoot and campaign around my garments are skills I hope to acquire.

In summary, I believe that as a designer who is adept at combining various materials and specialisms, I will develop my whimsy and produce more interesting and avant-garde designs during the BA course.
